The National Assembly has formally transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 to the Houses of Assembly of all 36 states.
The transmission was made on September 16, 2026, by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, pursuant to Section 9 of the Constitution.
The state legislatures are now expected to consider the proposed amendments and communicate their resolutions to the National Assembly. At least 24 of the 36 State Houses of Assembly — two-thirds — must approve a constitutional alteration before the process can proceed to the next stage.
The National Assembly has asked the state legislatures to communicate their decisions within 30 days of receiving the bill. Importantly, the Clerk clarified that the 30-day period is an administrative timeframe, not a constitutional deadline.
One of the major issues connected to the current constitutional amendment exercise is the proposed framework for State Police, which has been under legislative consideration in recent months.
