Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) figure Peter Obi has called for justice, accountability and respect for human rights as Nigeria marks six years since the Lekki Toll Gate shootings of October 20, 2020.
Obi made the call in a statement published on his official X account on Tuesday to commemorate the anniversary of the incident, which occurred during the nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality.
Describing the anniversary as a painful reminder of the price Nigerian youths paid in their demand for a better country, Obi said the incident left the nation with unresolved questions about justice, accountability and the sanctity of human life.
He recalled that peaceful protesters were met with gunfire on the night of October 20, 2020, resulting in reported deaths and injuries.
“We must never forget. We must never normalise injustice,” Obi stated.
Obi Calls for a New Nigeria
The former presidential candidate said the anniversary should strengthen the country’s resolve to build a society where citizens are protected rather than brutalised and young people are allowed to express their concerns without being silenced.
He reaffirmed his belief that a better Nigeria is possible, stressing that government power must be exercised responsibly and with respect for fundamental human rights.
According to him, Nigeria must become a country where citizens are not punished for demanding good governance and a better future.
His remarks come as Nigerians reflect on the significance of the #EndSARS protests, which drew nationwide and international attention to allegations of police brutality and demands for police reform.
The Lekki Toll Gate became a focal point of the protests in Lagos, where demonstrators had gathered to demand an end to abuses attributed to the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Six Years After #EndSARS
The #EndSARS movement emerged as a nationwide youth-led campaign against police brutality, arbitrary arrests and other alleged abuses by security operatives.
Although the protests prompted the Federal Government to announce the dissolution of SARS in October 2020, questions surrounding accountability for alleged abuses during the demonstrations have remained part of public debate.
Obi urged Nigerians to remember the victims and ensure that their sacrifices contribute to building a country where such a tragedy will never be repeated.
He also offered prayers for the departed, expressing hope that their memory would strengthen the country’s determination to protect human life and uphold justice.
