The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to conduct fresh primaries to replace candidates who leave the party, following the resignation of its Bauchi State governorship candidate, Ibrahim Kashim.
Kashim, a former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, announced his resignation from the party with effect from October 16, 2026, without disclosing his next political destination.
His departure has fuelled speculation about a possible move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), although he has yet to publicly confirm any plan to join another political party.
The NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, disclosed the party’s position in a statement issued in Abuja, saying the party would replace departing candidates through fresh congresses in affected constituencies.
According to The PUNCH, the party cited provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, as the basis for its position.
Director accused unnamed political actors of attempting to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections and urged party members and supporters not to be discouraged by the development.
He also criticised those leaving the party, questioning their commitment to its political ideals.
The party, however, did not publicly identify all the candidates allegedly considering defection.
KASHIM SAYS POLITICAL JOURNEY IS NOT OVER
In his resignation statement, Kashim said his decision followed careful reflection, maintaining that his departure would not diminish his commitment to political reform and the development of Bauchi State.
He said the state needed purposeful leadership, a stronger economy, improved security and greater opportunities for young people and women.
The former governorship candidate also assured his supporters that his political movement remained active.
“Our political journey is far from over, and our commitment to the rescue and development of Bauchi State remains unwavering,” he said in a statement reported by Channels Television.
Kashim urged his supporters to remain calm and united, promising to communicate the next phase of their political journey in due course.
POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS AHEAD OF 2027
The resignation comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with candidate selection and party loyalty emerging as important issues.
Kashim’s departure could create a vacancy in the NDC’s governorship ticket in Bauchi State and potentially trigger further political realignments if other candidates follow suit.
The party’s decision to conduct fresh primaries signals its intention to maintain its electoral plans despite the resignation.
However, the conduct of replacement primaries and the eligibility of any new candidate will depend on compliance with applicable electoral laws and relevant electoral requirements.
Kashim has not announced the political platform under which he intends to pursue his future ambitions.
His next move is therefore likely to attract attention as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
