President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained why he will not accompany the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council to every campaign rally across the country ahead of the 2027 general election, citing the need to prioritise governance, meet financial obligations and attract foreign investment.

Tinubu made the disclosure on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The President urged members of the council to take the party’s message to Nigerians across the states and local government areas, while he continues to attend to matters of governance.

Tinubu said he agreed with concerns that the demands of electioneering should not distract him from running the country.

“You’ve warned me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distract me from governance; I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision. Nigeria needs more attention now,” he said.

Tinubu further explained that the country had financial commitments that required his attention, including obligations to foreign creditors.

“So, you will excuse me from going everywhere with you; we have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait,” the President said.

The remarks suggest that the President intends to rely substantially on party leaders and members of the campaign council to mobilise support for his re-election bid, rather than personally attending every campaign event.

Foreign Investment and Economic Obligations

Tinubu also emphasised the importance of attracting foreign investors, indicating that his responsibilities as President would limit his participation in campaign activities.

His position comes as the administration continues to defend its economic reforms, including changes to the fuel subsidy regime and foreign exchange management.

While the Federal Government has argued that the reforms are necessary to stabilise the economy and improve public revenue, Nigerians continue to face concerns over living costs, purchasing power and employment.

The President’s decision to limit his campaign appearances is therefore likely to draw attention to how his administration balances its economic priorities with the demands of seeking another term in office.

APC Campaign Council to Lead Nationwide Mobilisation

With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the APC Presidential Campaign Council is expected to coordinate the ruling party’s campaign activities and mobilise support across the country.

Tinubu’s decision to delegate much of the nationwide campaign outreach to party officials places greater responsibility on the council to communicate the administration’s achievements, defend its policies and present its case for another term.

However, the effectiveness of the campaign will depend not only on political mobilisation but also on the administration’s record and its ability to address the concerns of Nigerians.

The opposition is expected to scrutinise the President’s economic policies, security record and performance since assuming office in May 2023.

Governance Versus Electioneering

Tinubu’s announcement raises an important question about the balance between presidential responsibilities and the demands of an election campaign.

While limiting campaign appearances could allow the President to devote more time to governance, his opponents may argue that seeking re-election requires him to engage directly with voters and defend his record before the electorate.

Ultimately, Nigerians will assess the President’s decision alongside his administration’s performance and the campaign promises presented by the competing political parties.

As preparations for the 2027 election continue, the APC faces the task of persuading voters that Tinubu deserves another term, while the President maintains that governing the country must remain a priority.
